What is a Puppy Mill?

Puppy mills are commercial enterprises which breed dogs in significant numbers for profit. Recent Pennsylvania statistics revealed 1,667 licensed commercial kennels with 156,534 kept dogs. Of these kennels, 254 were K-5 licensed to have greater than 251 breeding dogs each.

Kennel Closed, Fined
Operation shut down for 6 months, must pay $166,000

A Lancaster County kennel with a history of legal troubles was ordered to shut down for six months and fined $166,000 by a Commonwealth Court judge.

CC Pets LLC, the Peach Bottom kennel owned by I. Raymond and Joyce E. Stoltzfus and formerly known as Puppy Love Kennels, was ordered by Judge Barry F. Feudale to cease operating any business involving breeding or sale of puppies or dogs in Pennsylvania until Oct. 9.

East Earl Township Gives OK to 3 Kennels
All dog breeding facilities in operation for years

Two members of East Earl Township zoning hearing board struck a forgiving tone Monday night.

Board members gave their OK for three large-scale breeding kennels to operate in the township — after the kennels had been operating illegally for years.

Canine Health Board News
The newly formed Canine Health Board has agreed upon and compiled its recommendations in setting new standards for dogs kept in commercial kennels. Although the window for public comment has closed (February 16, 2009) we will report on the status of these recommendations as information becomes available.
